I had very briefly talked about Kate Bush sometimes earlier in the weeks but I absolutely love this album from her though that isn’t to say her other albums are bad, but in the overall music community this album is just something to praise. This one album was what had drawn me into loving Kate Bush’s music as I feel it’s very creative in terms of Art Pop of the 80’s.
From the very start of the album is the song “Running UP That Hill (A Deal With God),” which has these amazing synths in the background that sound like like a low pitch choir or something akin to that, honestly it’s kinda hard to describe. I think this is a fitting start to the album as it gives a climb up to the climax of this album, it really feels like your running up a hill as the name suggests. The next song is the title track which is just a very nice piece that shows off a little bit of the Baroque Pop that can be heard around the LP. The next notable track I feel is “Mother Stands For Comfort,” which is the first real down tuned track of the listing. You can get the feel of the odd sounds from the instrumentation a lot better with how slow the song is and gives us some great pacing as the next song is a real ride in my opinion. “Cloudbusting” is the song that comes right after and it’s probably my favorite song in this selection. It’s a bit long, ending at around 5 minutes but it’s worth it as the drums, organ, synths, violins and anything else I’m missing just really makes for a beautiful piece in the end and I feel as if this song is just a reminder to the listener that Kate Bush has some nice vocals. Sometime down the track listing is “Waking The Witch,” which shows how eccentric Bush’s music can get. There’s a deep voice that comes in reciting lyrics and there’s modifications to her voice sometimes, honestly her eccentricity is a gift if anything. The second to last song I’ll talk about is “Jig Of Life,” which features what I believe to be an accordion and Irish instrumentation. I’m a huge sucker for Irish or Scottish sounds and culture so this track really hooked me in. There’s even something akin to an accordion solo towards the latter half of the track which I find very enjoyable. Lastly is the closing track “The Morning Fog,” a bright closer with plucked guitars and overall just ends it all in a upbeat fashion.
I love this album with a passion and I feel like its a great intro to Art Pop and into any of Kate Bush’s earlier works. Again a very big recommendation from me.
