Talking Heads are an American New Wave band that formed in New York City in 1975 and became one of the more successful bands in their genre. New Wave blended several genres together though is more easily described as being influenced by Punk and Electronic music. Talking Heads’ 77, named after the year it released, was an early sound that would be built upon by the band, mainly being more Punk than their future projects. Though that’s understandable as they were a band that innovated their sound with each album.
Now, 77 may be my favorite album in their discography, most likely because of its punk aesthetics, though that’s not to say some of their other albums don’t stand on par with this wonderful album. Their sound still undeveloped and not really implementing the Aftobeat sounds that would later be incorporated into their future albums. 77 still is able to sound rich and fun with songs like, “Psycho Killer,” in the back end of the album which feature funny broken French while still having lyrical purpose. The opening track, “Uh-Oh, Loves Come to Town,” is everything fun as it has these bright instrumentals that just make you want to DANCE! Very honestly, I feel like I could dance to all these songs and “The Book I Read,” the seventh track in the listing, only seems to reinforce this statement.
Overall, this debut album is a very fun romp that I just can’t get enough of and the Talking Heads very luckily doesn’t let it end!
